Just purchased a '96 model Z71 with a 350 motor as a project. Have done lots of work on own vehicles, but not a professional mechanic.

Owner of truck said truck was running good and then it jumped time going down rd. He replaced the timing chain and both gears. Now the truck is not firing at all. He has not put all back together yet so timing chain is still easily accessible. I feel I need to check his work on the timing chain first?

Where do i need to start to make sure he installed timing chain and gears correctly? What is the firing order? How do I get to TDC on #1 cylinder?
Should dots on cam be at 6 O'clock and dot on crank at 12 O'clock?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

The large gear is the cam, set it at 6, the small gear is the crank, set it at 12

 

OK thanks Kevin, but before pulling timing cover off, I want to figure out why it is not firing. If it is out of time, it should still fire right? just might be on the wrong cylinder. Pulled #1 plug out and turned motor over, no fire at plug. Is there anyway to test coil and module on coil? ohmmeter maybe?

 

Yes. I don't know your exact setup, but suspect it has a pickup coil that may be an issue. If you have an ohmeter check the coil. I do NOT know the resistance, however there should be something. I am guessing somewhere around 1K?? Look at the rotor and cap. Since you questioned the timming, recheck the dots on the gear for alighment, cam gear dot should be at 6, and crank at 12.
