Angry 96 K1500 exhaust tips

I bought this truck about a week or two ago with 530***km (runs like a dream, just not very pretty) and im going through all the burbs and bumps and i've hit a wall. I got a P0101 code so I replaced the maf sensor ( was old and dirty) and its running better but I still am getting the code. After some research I found that this truck are notorious for having clogged catalytic converters trip that code. I'm trying to stay cost efficient but I also wanted a little bit more grumble from my pipe so i figure maybe i could straight pipe it but then i read that it can really mess with your mpg and low end power. This is my first truck and im trying really hard to take care of it so i really dont know what to do. should i just get a full cat back exhaust system replace? what systems are one you recommend, or should i straight pipe and tune it. if so can i just chip tune it? worse case i guess I can just replace the catalytic converter but whats the fun in that.

Considering the age and high km’s it wouldn’t be surprising if the cat is in need of replacement; however, if it’s running well other than the code, that’s an indication there’s little or nothing at all wrong with the cat. A plugged/restricted cat can cause multiple drive ability problems at all speeds and load ranges with misfires being the primary symptom.

With the engine at operating temp, check vacuum - it should be at least 15 in-Hg with a steady needle. Slowly increase engine speed to 2,000 RPM - vacuum should drop then recover when engine speed stabilizes. Snap the throttle shut - vacuum should max out the gauge then return to its initial reading at idle.

There’s nothing to be gained by deleting the cat - its only purpose is to convert exhaust gases - if it’s working properly, it will not interfere with exhaust flow in any noticeable capacity.

A P0101 can also be caused by faulty wiring, a bad PCM and vacuum leaks, all of which need to be methodically diagnosed or you could end up replacing a lot of parts for no reason. Personally I’d start with vacuum leaks - a lower intake reseal wouldn’t be unreasonable at this point.

I recently had to do some exhaust work, it was turning on the service engine soon light, turned out to just be an exhaust leak, I might suggest spending some time under the truck, with it running, preferably when it is cold (see condesation leaking out?) and run your hand near the exhaust everywhere, and check for leaks, their should be none. That would be my 2 cents...
