Default Driveshaft

89 Chevy 1500 long wheelbase 1pc driveshaft. Was wondering if anyone knows what the plastic sleeve is for on the driveshaft.Mine is torn and has slipped toward the transmission.Would it hurt anything to remove the plastic sleeve? Thanks

A picture would be the most helpful to be able to answer your question. Post one if you can.

If I had to guess, you’re probably referring to a “slinger” which is there to help protect the pinion seal from dirt, rocks and debris. You wouldn’t notice any drive ability problems by removing it, but without it, the seal has less protection.

I think you have one of the aluminum driveshafts and are referring to the carbon fiber sleeve. Looks like black plastic. I’ve never heard of any problems when they had to be removed, they just protect the aluminum from dings.

I do have the aluminum driveshaft and the carbon fiber cover is ripped and I think it is throwing the driveshaft out of balance .It has also slid forward about 2" on the driveshaft

Thankyou

Ya I’d cut it off before it causes a major problem
