Default Pre-Oiler Tap Location

I've purchased an electric oil pump. I wish to pull oil from the pan and push it thru a one-way valve into the oil galleries to raise the oil pressure prior to starting. I plan on using a momentary switch on the dash to activate it while watching the oil pressure gauge. These setups are sometimes also called a pre-luber.

I see no reason to use a fancy pressurized tank to do the job.

The question I have is where best to connect to the engine.

There is an oil cooler that appears to be tied to somewhere near the oil filter, but I cannot get a clear picture of it.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding choosing a connection point on the 6.5 turbo diesel?

Thanks.

The oil cooler often ties into an adapter that goes between the filter and the bottom of the engine, next to the pan. I would be tempted to tie in via those lines, but I guess the question is whether there would always be oil at that level, since it might be slightly above the level of the pan.

I can't see that in my diagram. I may have to wait to get the darn thing up on a hoist.

BTW, it isn't about getting oil; that just comes from down in the pan. It is about where to push it into the engine. Maybe I misunderstood you.

Ok - I guess I can't offer advice on how to return oil to the engine, short of the return hose if you have an oil cooler. Maybe someone else has an idea for you.

I’ve never installed a pre-lube pump before, but I expect the tap location will have to be as close to the mechanical pump as possible to ensure the entire system is getting oil.

According to the 6.5 manual, oil flows from the pump, to the cooler, then to the filter.

If it’s pulling oil directly from the pan, I’d recommend installing it somewhere in the cooler circuit to make sure the oil is still getting filtered before it gets into the engine. This may require an additional check valve to prevent back flow.

Here’s an oil flow diagram.

Looks like putting a one-way valve in the cooler return line and then adding a Tee to the port marked as C would work. The pre-oiler pump could be attached at the Tee. A one-way valve would also be placed in the line from a tap fairly low in the oil pan, thereby stopping any back-flow thru the pump.

If you haven’t figured out the tap yet, there are kits with a banjo bolt that attaches to a hose tap (similar to brake hose connections) that would allow for using the oil pan drain as the inlet.

Thanks everyone. Much appreciated. I'll see what I can do with these ideas.
