i have 1996 chevy short box .my vent tube is rusted off. i pluged it off and added new one in main diff. housing. thought it was good idea but was not . i ran vent hose up into frame with vent cap . after driving for a few days i am blowing gear lube out vent. i did not want to drill original vent out because i would have to remove ring gear and axles to get metal shavings out of axle tube. the vent i added is on top and in middle of diff. housing. any one have a new idea let me know

 

that's right where the lube gets slung around by the ring gear. Put the hole in a better spot.

 

i think you are 100% right. any suggestions. looking for some one that solved the same venting problem.

Maybe clean original spot down to bare metal and re-attach a vent using something like JB Weld, then paint to protect the repair

well what about the same spot ... on the other side?

 

the other side is same problem i have to take axle and ring gear out to clean . i still might have to do that

 

How did you manage to add a new vent without concern of metal shavings getting into the diff?

I don’t think you have much choice but to remove the axle for a proper repair - besides providing a vent, that bolt also retains the brake tee - if the vent nipple rusted off then it’s likely the bolt portion isn’t in much better shape and needs to be replaced anyway.
