rear diff. vent
#11
i took cover off covered ring gear and drilled hole in top of housing. threaded it for fitting then cleaned all metal put cover back on and ran vent tube up into frame but it will push gear oil out vent cap. not a lot but enough to make mesh on cement. my vent tube is not connected to brake tee

There’s no good place to put a vent on the diff housing - even if you relocate it to a different position, the fluid will still get pushed out of the vent - that’s why they’re in the axle tubes.
I can think of a way to repair the original vent without pulling the axle, but you’ll have to pull the cover and change the fluid again.
1) Remove cover and drain fluid.
2) Smear grease on the drill bit and tap - that will catch the bulk of the debris as you’re drilling & cutting. Use low speed to keep the grease from getting slung off the drill bit.
3) Once that’s complete, raise the vent side tube higher than the other side by at least an inch.
4) Use brake parts cleaner to flush the remaining debris down the tube and into the bottom of the diff housing where it can be cleaned up with a paper towel.
Try to fit the straw on the can inside the vent hole and spray cleaner towards the high side of the tube to flush it thoroughly. Then, rotate the tire/axle 180* to clean any metal that may be clinging to the axle. Don’t be shy with the cleaner - use 2 or 3 cans (or more) to be sure you’re getting as much as possible.
4) Seal the new vent you drilled with a plug/bolt and red thread locker.

quick up date i got old vent piece out. just started with 1/4 in. drill bit and worked my way up about .030 at a time. when i got to 3/8 the old piece broke loose and spin. worked it out of hole. i then measured factory hole it is .440. hope this info will held other people with same problem.
ps: you need to take all way apart there is alot of metal shavings to clean out when you drill it out this way
