So here it goes... 2003 GMC....Sierra. have you ever started the truck....
and the Fuel gauge come on.....and fuel gauge shows no fuel ( YES it has plenty of Fuel. ).... for the wise
acres out there.. lol
but as soon as you take the shift ****.. and place it in neutral... and back into drive
the light goes out and the fuel gauge pops up were it is suppose to be....
drive a little while... come to a light .. sit at the light for a min... same thing happens again..
LOL.. fuel light come on.. fuel gauge shows empty..... take gear shift place in neutral...
and light goes off and fuel gauge reads normal.....

TELL ME I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS EVER HAD THIS ISSUE....
and BE HONEST... lol

99 Silverado 3 door

I have a 99 Silverado with almost 239,000 miles on it. My fuel gauge sometimes reads empty with plenty of fuel in the tank. However, mine comes on after I've driven a few blocks and I'm thinking it's just sticky or something like that. Once it reads how much fuel is in the tank it reads until I shut it off. Sometimes it reads correctly, sometimes it reads empty with the low fuel light on. I figure it's like me. I'm 71 and there's times my "fuel light" doesn't come on either...

LOL I hear what your saying ......
This is a strange one for sure...
I have been thinking it was a possible ground issue...
the other day the low fuel light came on and I tried
several things to make the gauge work and the light
to go out... one of the things I did was rock the truck
back and forth... and sure enough the light went out
and the gauge started working again.. which leads
me to think its a ground issue.. possibly in the tank.....

the sending unit may be bad, the wiring for the sending unit may be bad. the stepper motor in the instrument cluster may be bad

I know Electrical problems are just that a Problem..lol
the cluster like you say could be bad.... its weird how if I take
the shifter and go to neutral and back to drive weather I am
sitting at a stop light or moving down the road...
it always fixes the issue...

My 2000 Vette did that, poured a bottle of Chevron Techron in the tank and it fixed it. My mechanic told me to do this and said the fuel pump gets gummed up and Techron cleans it right up. Now I do it every 3 to 6 months. No more problems!
