Mystery wire in IP harness, 04 base Silverado
Hi all,
I just picked up an 04 base Silverado, 4.8 auto 2wd. It had an aftermarket radio that was acting wonky. I'm a retired (20 years now) automotive electronics tech, former ASE Master Tech. I yanked the stereo, corrected the botched harness, and reinstalled it. As I was at it, I noticed a long light gauge wire poking out from under the cluster, so I pulled the cluster. Coming off the IP connector was an 18-20 gauge red wire (old eyes didn't see a stripe but might have one). This wire was pulled out of the harness, severed, stripped, and tucked away. According to the rather poor sources I found online, it *might* be a 12v reference voltage lead. Should I dig further into the harness and try to reconnect it, or let it be since I haven't noticed any problems yet? (only had it 2 days)
Thanks for anything you can offer!

Welcome to the forum. There is an old saying "If it aint broke don't fix it." So if everything is working well, Let It Be. By digging into it, you might create more problems than you want to deal with.

I hear ya a loose stripped wire just offends my sensibilities as an old ET. I'll let it be and watch for unexpected issues. Thanks for reminding me of the truth!

I haven't driven at night yet, but I'll look this evening. That's the wire though. I have to do water pump and timing belt on my kids PT Cruiser today, so no room in the shop till after. Thanks!
