Thumping sound almost like a grind
Skylar, Squeel or "Grinding" but only for a split second... All of the Needle Bearings were crushed and ground into rust dust... only 1 of the 4 caps had this so It made noise as the load transferred to that cap I guess... Stumped me for months! whenever I grabbed the driveshaft and twisted, pulled, and moved around it all seemed tight...
Only under slight acceleration would it happen but sounded like *** on the boat ramp! Cheap fix if that's what it is and if not... Preventative Maintenance! Just make sure you buy the U-Joint that has the grease fitting!

So I haven’t had the chance to look at what my problem is yet due to weather but just wanted to add this here just in case maybe this could narrow down last night when driving home from work and we was getting pretty hard from snow so I stuck it in 4x4 to get up the mountain I have to cross for work, when doing this the thumping sound like that it’s been making stayed steady to the point that I didn’t really have to press the gas to make it happen if I was slowing down and just letting it roll it would do it. Now when I turned there was a ground/rubbing sound from the tires. It wasn’t the normal hop that you get from driving in 4x4 on dry pavement there was no wheel hop from this. Could this maybe point me in any better direction or should I still stick white the u joints or cv joint being the problem?
OK Skyler,
The U-Joints are easier to remove, grease, and re-install if they are good... also cheaper if they are bad. When you engaged 4 wheel drive that changed the amount of "Load" that was applied to the offending U-Joint causing it to change the noise...
CV Joints when worn also make a "Popping/Clunking" sound depending on how dried up the grease is inside the boot. A Quick way to see if that is your problem is to inspect the Boots... ripped or torn boots= trouble.
I hope I am Helping You, I checked a lot of things when I went through the bad u-joint. I have always done a bunch of reading about things before I start working on something unless it was obvious, stick with it, One thing at a time so You will know what fixes it!
