Towing with the 4.3 V6
I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado regular cab short bed. Powered by the 4.3l v6 with a 5 speed manual. I am looking to buy an enclosed trailer to haul my motorcycles back and forth to mx tracks for races. I'm debating on which size trailer to get. I'd love to get a 6x12 but I'm afraid that it might be too heavy for the truck once it's loaded down with 2-3 bikes with all my gear and supplies. I'd do a 6x10 but same thing, afraid that it might be too much for my truck. I'm sure a 5x8 wouldn't be a problem but I might not have enough room for all my bikes and gear.. Not so much worried about fuel mileage. I just want the truck to be able to run freeway speeds as I will be a couple trips back and forth from Ohio to Florida. Looking for honest advice on which route I should go. Anyone tow similar loads with their v6 truck? And no unfortunately I can't get the funds to buy a v8 powered truck.
Google is your friend.

Depending on the differential ratio (3.08 or 3.42) the max tow limit for your truck as equipped is 3,600 lbs to 4,100 lbs. If it has the 3.08 ration then the weight limit is 3,600 lbs (trailer and everything in it). If it has the 3.42, then the limit is 4,100 lbs.
That will probably limit you to a small trailer. Need to find out the weight of trailers you are considering and then figure out the weight of your bikes and gear (whatever you'll be hauling in the trailer). The weight of the trailer + bikes + gear should not exceed the max tow limit.

If you had a 4.8L V8 the tow limit is 4500 (3.42)/ 5500 (3.73) with manual transmission and with the 5.3L is 7500/8500 (automatic).
Hope that helps.
