Your signature line is "200,000 mile club". That's what I & countless others were used to/expecting. Premature engine failure was not. Thanks for your input.

Default Thank you

for this site and topic . Cause I have join the club of having problems. I have 108,000 miles on my 08 chev Z71 .

I was told a new motor would cost 8,000. Back in June I had my transmission worked on when it could have been this problem all alone .

I told the service manger that I have seen this site and he knowledge that they new about it . He was going submit paper work to GM and Manger to see if they would cover anything .

My truck out of warranty so who knows what they will do . Hopefully they will make it right .

Default I guess I get to join the "club" 2009 GMC SLT 5.3 AFM 71000 miles (from Canada)

Well, I have been reading the posts here and thought I would add my adventure (so far) truck started making noise 2 weeks ago , been to dealer (took 1/2 hour without taking anything apart) to tell me I need Cam and lifters for $6226 Cdn to repair (seems to indicate this was not an unknown problem). After picking jaw off floor at estimate, asked and received quote for new engine $9100 Cdn. Called GM Canada and discussed as truck is 6 yrs old, but has only 115, 000 Km (71000 m) is over in years but way under in miles. Been researching issue and that is how I found this site. Received call yesterday from GM and said due to it being over the warranty in years there was nothing they could do. Have inquired at some local shops for repair quotes (5000 for repair, 6800 for new motor) said was easy to quote as they are doing a couple in their shop now. Have started to try and see if some of the things I have read will improve problem , cleaning motor with prodcuts mentioned in one post and might investigate filter. Truck has never used oil until this last trip , put 2 quarts in drove 750 miles and then changed oil, even though it had not used any yet. Have used Mobil 1 since new. Not sure of my next steps, but grateful for comments and ideas people have posted. Have been driving in M5 in town to try an minimize AFM kicking in while I figure out next steps. Have gone 1000 miles and oil still ok, checking it every fill up and will change it at 3000 miles, not by GM notification on dash.

I got news that GM covering my problem . I have over 108,000 miles . What I suggest you do is let them know you know and that seems to help . I told them I knew and they filed all the paperwork and knowledge they knew as well but wasn't going to tell me .

Laws maybe different up there than they're here . I was told I needed a new engine but told now I just need the lifter . I'm not too far from getting a new one . But I won't be getting another GM .

Who's trolling Newbe ?....I have been here for years and have contributed much positive information to this thread.

I am not disagreeing there is a problem, but the message that some are convening here is just not realistic.

So because my first post on the forum was January 2013 and yours was October 2012, I'm a newbie. OK.

My point was that yes, the percentage number of motors having the issue is low, however, they are all having the SAME issue, GM is aware of it, but does not stand by their product in most reported cases. Mine was repaired 3 times under warranty, and the 4th time, GM wouldn't repair it because it happened at 106k miles. It had just been repaired at 98k miles. Unfortunately, my experience was early on in the problem before it was so prevalent, and they kept putting the problematic lifters in. In my opinion this is something GM should own up to before they are forced to by a class action. That would be true customer service.

Have 77K miles.
Repaired 3 times. New pistons and all items.
Now have 1 year of warranty and till 84k miles on major guard.
Now intermittent rough idle and spark plug with much carbon on inside.

Dealer who did all repairs now wants me to pay for fuel injection cleaning and de- carbon.

I had a CAP case open. All documents filed with CA state and CAP 2 years ago.
I said no to my dime and left. Let them just do minor service for visit.

Whats suggestions?

I have no no no intention to pay a dime at this point. And not some non certified repair life fuel injection service that the webs is full of controversy that is even is real or works. May do damage.

Do not have lots of energy to fight this. To add injury to frustration. I had massive stroke 9/2013 and 100 recovered. Wife got cancer. I am whipped. Got not much will to fight. Mind is willing but body and mind are tired.

2010 and almost paid off. DO NOT WANT TO BUY NEW TRUCK. WITH CANER NEED TO PAY OTHER BILLS.

What is next step? I plan to go to another dealer and explain problem and history of truck engine. Or should I go right back to CAP and GM?

I almost began to shake knowing all this junk on this engine and nice service rep will charge me $400 on a known issue and take my money.

Wife says junk it. Trade. But I pay the bills. I planned to pay off and have for years. But this is a known pending disaster and I need action.

I have a little calm as it is still under warranty. But I see the darkness coming. Not the light. GM dealers look like they want to bail on me now.

Whats the word on the street. Any LAW knowing people reading?
2010 with filed CA CAP issues. Multi repairs and pistons replaced for carbon oil use at 30- 50K miles 2 years ago.

Now symptoms and less oil use coming back but no CEL. Rough intermittent idle.
Can be smooth then some days bad. Have photo of spark plug now.

2015 screen shot of carbon plug.
black carbon inside plug not on end.

I have a 2009 Chevy Tahoe Hybrid. 172,000km. While on a family vacation in Vancouver last month, my Camshaft rods and lifters went. First GM said the repair would be $6000. After my ranting and raving and phone calls to customer service, they lowered the final price to $3000. I am out about $12,000 total with lost wages and expenses of an extra 7 days in Vancouver. This is a flaw in the AFM engine and we the consumers need to band together against GMC to get our money back. I am prepared to pursue a class action suit, or at least contact the media with a list of people who have had this problem. (W5, Fifth Estate, 60 minutes). I am trying to gather contact information from other GMC owners who's camshaft has gone. I have already contacted the GMC executives and I have their attention. Lets work together to go after GMC to acknowledge and fix this.

Or she could simply do as being told here, to buy the kit, defeat the AFM and blissfully drive along.
