Same issue 2 weeks ago. 2008 Silverado LTZ Crew 4x4 L76 6.0L. Took mine into Johnson Auto trying to ID what I stated was excessive lifter chatter. I was advised it was piston slap and a smartass remark on my ticket was to replace all pistons to prevent noise. Proceeded to change plugs and wires and some other PM items totaling over $1K. 7 days later it kicked traction control codes, and the engine light flashed. It turned out to be AFM lifter failure resulting in a lost lobe with metal transfer through the engine. $6,700 out of pocket for a reman replacement crate and zero concern from GM. 129,000 miles. I've been lied to and set on the backburner with 3 day simple repairs, for years and now this. I've owned nothing but GM for my entire life and will NEVER buy another one. I really had hoped to buy a new unit at 200K miles. Now I own a truck that I can't get out from underneath and am petrified to ever take back to GM service for any other faults.

Hello all dissatisfied and pissed off GMC/Chevy owners.
This past Mon I picked up my 2009 GMC Sierra from my friends shop.
As with all of you I had AFM related lifter failure. This is my 2nd engine. GM replaced the first one with less than 30k on it. This was shortly after we taxpayers bailed their *** out.
Current mileage is 110k on 2nd engine.
There is a permanent fix for this problem. Which I had done for just under $3k.
Dealership will not do it.
LT1 Swap
Basically converts the engine to a standard, full time V8.
I'm all in for a class action lawsuit regarding this issue.
I'm just a working stiff that received the shaft from a company whose product I have been using for over 25 years.
This type of expense is inexcusable.

What you just said hit me in the gut. You mean to tell me that I can expect to have the same problem again the future? Now this really reminds me of the Chevrolet Corsica but with more costly items. I keep saying that I want to stay with GM but if they really did not provide me with a solution and only a temporary patch, then how can I invest my money in another one of their products. Their new SUVs are experiencing problems. I am really at a crossroad right now.

Very probable. It's a **** poor design.
I believe their current warranty is 120k on new vehicles.
That tells me something.
I'm married to the damn thing for awhile.
If I do stay with GM it will be a single wheel, 1 ton, with Duramax and Allison.

Quite the contrary. The powertrain warranty for most 2016 vehicles have changed from 5 year 100,000 to 5 year 60,000. 2015 was the last year that SUVs had the 100,000 powertrain warranty. When you think about that and you are faced with engines like these you wonder if getting a new one is worth it.

Default Update on 2009 GMC with AFm 5.3 l

After picking jaw off floor at estimate, asked and received quote for new engine $9100 Cdn. Called GM Canada and discussed as truck is 6 yrs old, but has only 115, 000 Km (71000 m) is over in years but way under in miles. Been researching issue and that is how I found this site. Received call yesterday from GM and said due to it being over the warranty in years there was nothing they could do. Have inquired at some local shops for repair quotes (5000 for repair, 6800 for new motor) said was easy to quote as they are doing a couple in their shop now. Have started to try and see if some of the things I have read will improve problem , cleaning motor with prodcuts mentioned in one post and might investigate filter. Truck has never used oil until this last trip , put 2 quarts in drove 750 miles and then changed oil, even though it had not used any yet. Have used Mobil 1 since new. Not sure of my next steps, but grateful for comments and ideas people have posted. Have been driving in M5 in town to try an minimize AFM kicking in while I figure out next steps. Have gone 1000 miles and oil still ok, checking it every fill up and will change it at 3000 miles, not by GM notification on dash.
Well last week got the dreaded signals that lifter had failed, stabiltrack/ engine and traction control lights and engine running rough. Went to independent garage, no 4 lifter failure. Replaced all lifters and cam because no4 lifter that ground down cam. Cost was 4000 Cdn. Had been using AFM delete module when first had tick on lifter, will continue to use it while i figure next step, probably change out truck once I look around. Truck has 132000 km ( 82000 mi) on it. 15k from first tick to lifter failure. Thanks GM

Default 2007 Tahoe 5.3 AFM

First # 6 lifter failed, now another has failed after the $5000+ repairs. So, I am going to disable the AFM, have all lifters, rockers, cam, etc. replaced with after market quality parts. GM should be sued for their knowledge of this defect and for not responding to the $millions we have spent on their junk.

I have been a GM person since I began driving in the '60s. Owned:
1 Z28
2 Corvettes
2 GMC S15
2 GMC AWD Safari
2 Cadilac Eldorado ETC
1 Buick Riviera
1 Buick LaSabre
...but my last GM will be the Tahoe.

Add it up GM; your sleeze will cost you future sales. I have hundreds of friends and the internet is instant and global.

Hey Foley, sorry to hear about that. I'm reading that this is your second repair. If so, what were the miles on your Tahoe when the first breakdown occurred and at what miles did the second breakdown occurred?
