Default Stablitrak/traction control turn off

I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500, 5.3, 124K.
I drive down the road fine then my traction control and stabilitrak turns off and then says to service them. Thoughts?? I have no idea where to even start w/ this thing

You'll need to take it someone with a fancy diagnostic scan tool to read the computer trouble codes. On GMs the service stabilitrak is kind of a generic message. It can be triggered by a variety of things. Engine problems, transmission, steering, ABS etc. Symptoms when you see the message could be nothing, or the car will go into limp mode, or not run at all. Stabilitrak involves the stability recovery, antilock brake, and traction control systems, and they require a lot of different inputs to work properly. Stabilitrak messages can be a real nuisance to track down.

Most likely it’s the steering wheel position sensor - it’s a common failure on these trucks and the stabilitrak/traction control are the messages triggered when they fail. Oftentimes this can be verified by making sharp turns or u-turns in an empty lot - if the turn triggers the warning messages, the position sensor is the cause.

It’s at the base of the column and can be replaced in about an hour with a basic tool kit - some trucks do require torx bits to remove the plate holding the sensor in place. Make sure to inspect the wiring for problems as well.

I don’t often say that OEM parts are the only way to go, but in the case of these sensors, the aftermarket replacements are really hit and miss. I recommend getting an AC Delco sensor just to save yourself the hassle of replacing it again.
