wheel binding, and horrific clunking, popping, banging noise.
2011 chevy silverado 1500
After about a 15 mile ride, I turned left into a plaza parking lot (which was my destination) and heard some pretty horrible clunking, and popping noises. it did not matter if I was turning, driving straight, low speeds or not. so I got to my parking spot, and did a little shopping, hoping after it cooled down, I would at least be able to get her home, without trouble, then sort out the issue... after about 20 minutes, I started the truck put it in drive, and as soon as I took my foot off the break and started to roll, there was another horrendously loud popping sound. A man sitting in his car a couple spots down jumped when he heard it, he came and offered help, so he looked under the truck when I was rolling (and the noise continued) and he said he thought it was coming from the transfer case. so I slowly rolled over to Firestone which was right next door, with loud clunks pops and thuds the entire way. they told me they cant even look at it until the next day, and when I mentioned the possibility of transfer case, they suggested I take it somewhere else.
So, I called for a tow, I told the Tow truck driver he can drive it up the flat bed, and he did, with no noise, got it home, took it off the flatbed, again, no noise. took it up and down the driveway a couple times, no noise. then my mechanic friend came over, and we drove it up and down the driveway, no noise.... down the street, no noise, into a church parking lot, no noise.... figure 8s,no noise... at this point I felt like I wasted 2 and change on a tow that was not needed. but then, when we decided to drive back to the house, BOOM.. BANG>. CLUNKKKKKK.
so I creeped home, jacked up the front end, and he tried to spin the front passenger wheel by hand, and it was binding up both foward, and backwards. but only when it wanted to... sometimes it would spin freely for several rotations, and sometimes it would randomly bind, and there was not forcing it to spin. the driver side wheel spins both directions, with no binding. we tried putting the truck into 4x4 to see if that would free anything up, but it did not. same issues in 4x, sometimes it would spin freely, sometimes it would bind.
he is thinking its something to do with the diff, but he's not sure. we plan to take it apart tomorrow, and see what we can find. but I'm hoping someone here has an idea what can be causing this, and a fix, so I can speed the process up, and don't end up fixing things that are not necessary.
