Default Armrest Charging Pad Delete

Has anyone basically removed the charging pad from the truck. My reasons are... 1) it doesn't work worth a crap. 2) no phone since 2012 fits in it 3) it doesn't work anyway and 4) let's be honest....it's in a dumb place (under my arm where I have to actually turn my head to see it).
So because of this, I was thinking maybe filling it it with a pad or filling it in and recovering the arm rest (which seems expensive).
Anyway, has anyone done this or given it any though? It seems there must be something

Seems like a lot of trouble to me, but ya' gotta do what ya' gotta do. I love my 15' Malibu but the power-ports only stay on with the key on. I want to be able to charge my phone when the car is off and my Garmin GPS camera keeps recording. Going to rewire it so it works all the time. it has a huge battery, so I don't know why Chevy auto designers made it this way.
