Looking to buy Duramax - questions/advice
Hey Guys, I'm looking at buying a Duramax, GMC or Chevy doesn't really matter. I'm looking for something with about 30k - 80k miles, seems to put me around 2013 - 2016, maybe a few older and newer here and there.
My first question is, will a 2011 with 50k miles be much different in terms of reliability, issues and value as a 2016 with the same amount of miles? Obviously theres the body style difference and features, which isn't a big deal to me. I'm a bit surprised by not seeing a huge gap between 2011 trucks and 2016 trucks with similar mileage.
Are there any years I should stay away from? Highly doubt I'll get something older than 2011 (and even that is a stretch unless I find a screaming deal).
What issues are common and should I ask about/look out for?
What are the problem areas of these trucks and when can I expect for them happen? IE, when do glow plugs usually go, is there a specific maintenance weak link, etc.

for me i'd want to stay away from high mileage 200 000kilometer plus. I'd also stay away from def fluid systems which are probably introduced 2012 ish. do not get anything that was tuned or you will be paying 29hours labour for headgaskets.
I hope you have a real need for a diesel bc the maintenance requirements and repair costs far outweigh the fuel mileage savings.
price out these parts:
8 injectors
turbo
injection pump
oxidation catalyst
so if your buying from a dealer...inquire about a service contract
