Serial Data Gateway Module and Radio
I had a drivers front diff seal fail and went in to get it replaced free of charge. I have been doing free oil changes since I bought the vehicle and they ran out so I started doing them, first time I went under their was oil all over the skid plates. Never enough to drip on the ground but I thought it was strange. Removed and cleaned them, next oil change more oil so I saw where the seal had oil on it above where the oil was on the skid plates and took it in to get it fixed. Strange they never said anything about it when they were changing the oil. Another thing that pissed me off is when I got it back after the fix the skid plates still had oil all over them. I took them off to clean them and whoever put the bolts in the skid plates after fixing the diff seal broke off the captive nuts making it nearly impossible to get the stupid bolts out to get the skid plates off. Anyway, I made and appointment to get that seal fixed and the next morning after I made that appointment, the GPS map on the display was of the globe, not zoomed in where I was driving. Nav wouldn't work, it didn't know where I was just showed the globe super zoomed out. When I received my confirmation for the appointment for the seal replacement it said it was for a recall, no mention of the seal. When I dropped it off I asked about it because there was nothing about the seal on the appointment. They said they were fixing the seal and doing a recall. Well they ended up keeping the vehicle over night, never called or anything, they are short staffed bla bla bla, it will be done at 10 the next day. No calls or anything the next day, so I just end up going after work before they close and it turns out the update or whatever they were trying to do they couldn't get it to work. So they say they have to order a new module and I can take the vehicle but there will be a check engine light on. So it has been over a week, haven't heard anything. Just wondering what everyone else is doing. Everything still seems to work but the map is still zoomed out and doesn't seem to be working. I use Android Auto most of the time anyway. I do pay for the onstar service that allows the use of the phone app to control of some of the vehicle functions as well as a data plan. The remote start won't work, haven't tried it through the app yet.
One other strange thing is our Dodge Durango has auto emergency braking so if your going to back into something it slams on the brakes, dislocates everyone's neck in the car and sounds like the transmission just fell on the ground. It is super fun because it will just do it like when your backing into a parking spot, or backing out of the garage. I often wondered if the Silverado would do this or had this feature and it never has. I get the red triangles if I am in reverse and people walk behind or a car drives by which always reminds me of Star Wars or Top Gun like the thing is locked on and ready to fire! Anyway I was downtown backing out of a parking spot on to the street kind of at a diagonal, a car comes down the street so I stop, they stop far back and obviously want my spot, so I continue baking out, they left a ton of room for me to back out. Another car comes down the street the other way in the other lane and my pickup slams on the brakes with the red triangle on that car that drove by. Dislocated necks, wife pissed off, so it does have that auto brake function! Never has applied the brakes like that until then in any situation. The GPS maps system was messed up the next morning.

By the way, while I’ve been dealing with all this mess at the dealer, I’ve also been looking into better online tools for my side projects. If anyone here runs a small shop or service and needs reliable online payments, I’d suggest checking out this payment gateway website. It’s one of the more affordable options out there and way less of a headache than dealing with clunky systems that overcharge you.

As for the GPS/nav situation, it seems tied to the update or module replacement they attempted during the recall service. Since they left you with a check engine light and no real follow-up, I’d definitely stay on them for an update about that new module. Using Android Auto at least gives you a workaround, but considering you’re paying for OnStar, you should expect full functionality.
On the auto-brake part, it’s interesting that it finally triggered in that scenario. These systems can be unpredictable — sometimes they save you, other times they’re just a headache. It’s worth keeping in mind how sensitive they can be in tight situations.
Bottom line, I’d press the dealer harder for answers, especially with them holding the truck overnight and not communicating. At the very least, you deserve clear info on the module replacement timeline and confirmation that everything else (including OnStar and remote start) will be restored properly.
