Default 87 Astro key turns but stops ... (pics)

... just before it reaches the ignition STARTing position, but the wheel is freed as well as the shifter, and I am 8 miles from town.

The steering wheel is stuck on after I removed the center bolt so I need to get a puller I guess. I cannot get inside to find what two wires I need to use to kick the starter.

The Harness Plug

The keys 'stopped' position ... and will not go past that, I broke the "assister" trying. I tried everything too, like shifting to N and beating on it like a MAD MAN! A hacksaw is NEXT!

This is what has me stopped. IF nothing else guys (and gals too please tell me what bolt I need to get to pull this off. Towing to town is 50-75 bucks, and a guy to come out here is 100. This is a farm van.

Before this happened, it was hard to turn to the OFF position and really it did not need a key either

If I could jump the coil this would not be an issue, right?

I really wished I could simply put a push button in like my Grand Pa use to do on the dash.

Any help greatly appreciated ... my address is XXXX Bloomnille Road in Man. SC and the Van is registered to me.

If the key will turn to the on position and unlock the steering then the coil has power, just jump across the starter with a screwdriver and it should start.

OK MudManIac,

Bar sounding stupid before I try this ...

And ... OK You got me ... I am a Ford guy!

I have plundered all under the hood and moved the bubble thing inside the van out of the way as far as it will move. It is obviously too dark to try now, but I tried for the life of me to find the starter relay thing, OH SO convienient on my Cobra (right beside the battery).

Would this be one of those that is located by or attached to the starter itself?

And if I get to it, mind you, I do not have any room hardly to get under this vehicle ... if I find the two that will cause it to kick, what kind of power will be there AND might I tap and run a push button up and save me all kinds of hassle later?

I really don't care if there are even two wires dangling out the dash, but I also want to know is, is that a really low Amp 12 V that would only need a simple push button?

To jump it at the starter you would jump across to high amp terminals on the starter it's self. To install a push button switch you would need to install it across the starter solenoid which is a lower amp draw.

OK ... so it is jacked / securely standed - completely up where I can get to the starter and high amp terminals. This is going to work for now OR once I should say ... but I have one more question set I hope.

Where is the solenoid on the 4.6 L V6? Is it separate?

There is a silver smaller looking "motor thing" on the side of the starter where it has what I believe is the high amp terminals you're discussing facing the rear of the van. One is black, one is red and they are double nutted nice size bolts. I think I can jump across it with an open end wrench and GLOVES!

In the first pic is the item I plan to cross ... see the brass nut ... and there is another one behind that one.

Is this the Coil?

< YES! That is the coil!

I still can not locate the solenoid anywhere. I would MUCH prefer to try that cross over rather than the one time wonder high amp crossing.

The solenoid is the bright shiny silver thing ON the side of the starter! 2 pictures up!

=================================================

More pictures after following the purple and red wires leading to the unit aside the starter:

The purple one is the large one on the right of this unit at the firewall.

< Here is the ANSWER right here.

The large purple wire has to run over to the battery + side to turn the starter ... I used an extention cord, and now have that ran in to the van where I bend the prongs together and start the van. The key shuts it off like normal I AM HAPPY!

================================================== ==============

And the bigger red one runs to the back of the altenator in the center of this pic:

There is a power cable running directly from the Battery to the Starter I believe, as best I can follow that one.

It appears to run to one of the twin bolts on the silver unit. The one I can not really get to.

What do I cross in any event?

I can't believe I am going through all this because I cannot get the steering wheel off, and no one knows which two wires under the dash I could cross to bump the starter.
