Default 04 fuel filter

Anyone know where it is for a 04 avalanche? The majority of my searches say it attached to the rail underneath the driver's door. I looked front to back three times but have found nothing. Then I found a post that said GMC started putting the filter in tank sometime in 2004. (Please tell me that's not for real.) My manufacture date is 04/04.

GM started phasing out the in-line fuel filters in the late 90’s/early 2000’s - if there’s nothing on the rail between the tank and engine, it doesn’t have one.

The majority of gas vehicles (GM or other) no longer use in-line filters because the fuel pumps are fitted with a sock type filter during manufacture.

The in-tank pump filter will catch anything small enough to damage the pump (which is also small enough to damage injectors) and that protects the entire system.

If the filter fails, it takes out the pump first; which, on many makes, is still a cheaper fix than replacing the injectors.

The filters can last the life of the fuel pump, but over time, debris and/or age can cause failure, as it would with any other automotive component, but how long they actually last is determined by several factors.

That's great information! Thank you for taking the time to explain all of this. Guess I need to get the pump replaced.

Definitely great info.
Respectfully, my problem is that I can't tell which filter that I need. On RockAuto, I seem to be getting filters with different dimensions; if I'm looking at the right thing at all.
I have a 2005 Silverado LS 4.8 Extended Cab. Asking for a little help ,please.

There were only 2 styles of filters used on these trucks - one had threaded fittings on both sides, and one had a threaded fitting on one side with a quick connect fitting on the other.

I’m not sure on the exact application for either, but the threaded end(s) will be the same regardless - the overall dimensions of the filters (length x diameter) are of little significance.
