2002 Avalanche parking brakes issues
I got my first question for the community.
I purchased a 2002 Avalanche from a friend for a good price. Its fuel pump was busted and I changed it. I also fixed issues with the audio system and replaced the headlights. All good until I took the car for a longer ride.
I noticed that my parking brakes were not really effective. The car being 19 years old I though the shoes were probably worn out. But while driving I could hear some noise, like something rubbing and after driving a few kilometers I also noticed a strong smell (same as a burnt clutch or overheated brake pads). My rear hubs were quite hot.
My buddy told me that with all the American cars he imported to Japan in the past years, he always avoided using the parking brakes as they had a tendency to get stuck... I believe it's my problem but I need to check these first. I suppose that corrosion and age caused misfunction in the system and the shoes probably don't retract properly.
Do you guys have any advice so I don't have to spend fortunes there? Is there anything I should pay attention to or something like that?
I've found lots of similar issues online. Looks like the initial system had faults that kept the lower shoe rubbing in the disc bell, consequently wearing of the pads prematurely. Is there to your knowledge an upgraded system I could purchase and install? I've read somewhere there had been recalls on this model with M/T... If I could find a way to fix it for good it would be awesome...
Sorry about the questions but It's my very first American car. I usually build Halreys and Triumph bikes but A big Chevy Avalanche really is a new thing for me.
Many thanks in advance for your precious input.
