Trans wont shift into OD untill warm
I'm curious if this is normal or not. I've got the 4 speed transmission on my 93 chevy lumina. And when cold the car only shifts into the first 3 gears. And won't go into OD no matter my speed. But after I've been driving it and it getting warm, then it wants to shift into OD. After it gets hot, the trans shifts completely fine.
Is this normal? If not would anyone know what could be going bad?

If it's just the first couple of minutes, accompanied by higher RPM shift points but without noticeable slippage, it's nothing to be concerned. It's to let the engine warm up quicker and thus reduce emissions.

ah okay thank you. the only thing that bothers me is when im going about 55+ and the trans is in OD. it seems as if i dont press the gas enough, it will shift into 3rd. then ill have to step on the gas a little harder for it to go back into OD. is that normal? i dont mean to sound picky, but i guess i am picky about getting my car completely back to normal lol.

Oh....
You have a 1993 Chevrolet Lumina.
You have a 3 speed auto, you do not have a 4 speed transmission.
You do not have overdrive, you have only 3 gears then a torque lock up.
What your worried about is the TCC lock up
(Torque converter)
The torque converter will not engage until the vehicle gets up to temp.
The torque converter will not engage above a certain speed, usually 37 MPH.
The torque converter will disengage if you let off the gas, press the break, or push to much gas.
The torque converter only locks up after 3rd gear.
Your selector reads: P-R-N-D-2-1
This is perfectly normal operation for your vehicle, keep a steady foot and it will stay locked up longer...
I hope this helps.
Your car is one of these:
1993 Chevrolet Lumina Base Sedan 2.2L 4-cyl. 3-speed Automatic Features and Specs
------------------------------------
You do not have this, but I post it anyways for helpful info:
The 4 speed auto has overdrive.
The 4 speed auto also has a torque converter.
The 4 speed auto selector reads: P-R-OD-D-L
L is first and second gears in direct lock up with the TCC, only shifts at max engine RPM.
OD goes 1-2-3-4 then will lock up.
D goes 1-2-3 then will lock up.
OR it will read: P-R-N-D-3-2-1
D is 1-2-3-4 Then lock up.
3 is 1-2-3 then lock up.
2 is 1-2 then no lock up.
1 is just 1 with no lock up.
