Synthetic Vs Non-synthetic
It's not mandatory by any means that you change the oil on a new engine at 100 miles. The idea is to remove any metal fragments from the machining process, but the filter will catch them anyway. If you want to do it, go right ahead. It won't hurt anything.
As far as synthetic oil is concerned, the advantage is that synthetic oil (as opposed to petroleum based) holds its viscosity better under extreme high and low temperatures. So if you're at the North Pole, or Death Valley, it certainly can help. Under normal conditions it may not be worth the added expense. However, if it's your love-child Camaro, go for it! No proof, but in my experience there may be a disadvantage to switching back and forth from synthetic to petroleum. So pick one and stick with it.

yah i run full syn in my 2500 and love it....i was just wondering because when i bought the truck new it had the wonderful quaker in her....now nothing but amsoil goes in every hole
