Default HI, and Timing issues

Hey guys, just want to say hello, im new here to the caprice forums, and was wondering if gents could help me out with something -

Something is not right with my stock 92 caprice (305), it runs very rough, sputters whenever it moves, Ive started by checking the firing order as a tune up was done, and it seems that 2 of the wires were crossed (shop obviously didn't see the "firing order" indicator on the intake manifold), but ANY got that fixed, and was running much better, but something still felt/feels off...

Anywho - I am wanting to check the timing next, and I of course know how to check timing on a car (locate bracket indicator in front of block, attach light to batter and #1 cyl), but this caprice has me kind of stumped.

Ive gotten under the car to check out the (stock)balancer, and there is a single notch cut into it, but cannot visibly see any other markings on it. I scoured the internet trying to find out where the markings would be on a stock balancer for that year with no luck... now ALSO

I am having problems finding the bracket that it is supposed to match up with to shine the timing light on to be able to tell what the timing is set at.

I feel like SUCH a noob, but I am when it comes to this make and model -

Any pics of these things your guys my have, or links, or descriptions?

Thanks!

B

Ohlong Welcome to the forum

I know on newer vehicles the timing is set electronically and can not be set...
I don't know how far back that went even with distributor engines...
if you don't have the bracket with the marks do you see a bracket that looks like a metal tube? if so that is where the timing probe would go, not sure if a light can be used for the application....
hopefully some of the other users can chime in... keep us updated on what you find
