Default VIN location

I found a couple of threads on this by searching, but no definite answer.

To register our Caprice in Ireland, the authorities need to see a VIN number stamped on the body or chassis. The VIN is on a plate, visible through the windscreen on the drivers side. It's also printed on a sticker on the driver's door jam. Unfortunately, neither of these are "permanent" enough.

Any ideas? The car is a 1981 4-door Caprice Classic.

It's the same problem here in Denmark.
We stamp it ourself on to the frame, in front of the passenger side front wheel on the side of the frame.
Hope it helps :-)

Yep, that's what we ended up doing. All sorted now :-)

Permanent VIN location seems to be a European problem.
Luckily I managed to register Caprice without troubles - it was the first registration in Poland - although there were questions about the permanent VIN.
After that, one day - during the frame cleaning - I noticed the VIN permanently stamped on it - front passenger side, just behind the front wheel - like CapriceClassic mentioned above.
I thought it had been stamped by the factory.

What I've heard, is that the VIN isn't stamped on the frame from the factory, since the frame could be changed like a sparepart....
The VIN on the frame could also first be stamped on a thick piece of sheet metal that afterwards is welded to the frame, so that way it's permanent.

Glad you got the car registered :-D (y)
