I've been having the same issue with my 2014 (100k miles) Captiva.
My issue was very intermittent but came to a head about 10 days ago. I took it to the dealer and they said, as I suspected, that it was a transmission interlock problem.
Unfortunately the whole gear shift unit needed to be replaced at a cost of $500.

Thanks John. I hope GM is reading these. What a shame. It's such a nice car and they have been making it forever. GM, please help!! Mine is 2014 with only 40K on it. We have two of these. The 2012 has been fine!!

$1,000 repair. GM won't admit that it's a defect!!! You will need a whole new shift assembly. I asked for help and they denied it.

I have a 2014 and had this issue off and on. I took it to a friend who owns a shop. He said the shifter wiring harness is a common problem in GM products that causes this. He was able to take mine apart and move some wires and I haven't had the issues again. Mine does however turn the radio on randomly and kill my battery. Junk.
