Default Captiva rear hatch issue

2012 Captiva. Acquired by/for my mother. She finds that the hatch is a bit hard to reach when open. Would be much easier if there was a pull strap that hung down so she could get the hatch down to within her reach ( amounts to just a few inches: I tried to convince her she needed a car with power lift gate-would not listen...you know how they are!). Wondering if anyone knows a good mounting location for one. I would want to fashion it so that it would not hang out or get closed into the hatch, be just low enough to maybe reach the bottom of the interior panel when closed, but it would need to screwed to something more substantial than the interior plastic panel, preferably a place where the plastic panel is screwed to the metal structure.

If its not a difficult job I would take the panel off and determine a good spot for mounting the strap. This way you could be sure of what's behind that panel.
