Default 03 Cavalier wont start or shift into gear

I have an 03 Cavalier with 98,000+ miles and automatic transmission. When I pulled into the driveway today the engine died. I put the car into Park however the car would still roll in the driveway therfore I set the emergency brake. If the key is in the on position I can move the shifter but do not hear the transmission change between gears. The car will not start. It does not turn over. All dash lights work when the key is turned. When the key is turned to the start position, the starter does not engage. There isnt any noise at all from the engine compartment. Is there anything I can check or just call a tow truck?

it could be something as simply as the shift linkage popped off. this would allow the lever to move but the trans would still be in gear....so it would roll as the parking pawl is not engaged. it won't crank over as the trans range switch is not in park or neutral.

Thank you tech 2! The linkage was the issue. I put it back together and the car started and I was able to shift into gear. But am concerned it will not stay. Is there a special tool used to snap it together or just squeeze it with pliers? I assume I will need to replace it eventually as it looks really worn.

I can't say without seeing it.

how about this...If it continues to pop off; replace it. If it stays put, your good.
