Default 04 2.2 Base Cavalier - Theft Service Lights

Hi All,

I have a 2004 2.2L EcoTec Cavalier, the base model without power locks or windows. Recently, some days when I start it up the "Theft System" light and the "Service" light next to it will come on when I start it up. I was initially concerned that it wouldn't start back up after I shut it off.
Thankfully, this isn't the case and it'll start right back up no issues and goes away. But reading threads here and around the web, it seems the theft system is a common problem with the Cavalier, and I wonder if with the Service light there is something I can do now before it becomes a real issue one of these days?

Thanks!

get the codes read and post them here.
theft codes are body codes so a full function scan tool is required. a code reader can read the codes for the ses light ie powertrain codes.

Okay, I will see if any parts stores near me have one for rent, or when I go get my oil changed I will ask them to read the codes. My buddy has one of those tablet ones as well but he's a couple hours away.

Quick update to this thread, I came across another thread saying they had this issue along with the radio and gauges freaking out. They resolved it by check the ground connection off the battery and cleaning it up.

My battery tray is completely rusted out, so I’m thinking that’s my issue.

Final update for this: at work I borrowed some tools and wire, along with a couple wire bolts and bypassed the original ground to the battery tray.

It seems all is good now, so for anyone in the future I would check that first. It was a simple, easy fix.

If anyone has any part numbers for a new battery tray, please let me know so I can get it replaced.

Edit: Resolving this also resolved my issue of my AC fuse blowing any time I put a new one in and started the car. My AC works now too!
