We have a 1997 Cavalier. Recently when braking hard the brakes "pop" and release as if the ABS has activated then reengage after an interval. My past experience with ABS had been that this interval is very short and feels like a series of "pops." This time it is a single "pop" and the vehicle travels a foot or two before the brakes reengage. This sequence repeats while the vehicle is braking.

Driving carefully and braking slowly, anticipating stops, allows the car to operate normally. However, if a vehicle suddenly stops short in front of you there is the real danger of hitting it when the brakes release like they do, which is what almost happened. Don't want anyone driving a car that is dangerous.

Can anyone offer any advice or suggestions?
