2000 Cavilier Question
I have a 2000 cavilier and it started out by sometimes not wanting to crank the engine over. I had a mechanic come start me the other day nd he shorted across the selinoid and it cranked right up. H said he just mived some wires to get it to crank.
So next day it done it agian. I raised hood and shook some wires aand got in turned key and it cranked right up. The wires are the ones that hook to the selinoid on starter.
Today it did it agian and shaking wires wont work. However I can take a screw driver and short across rhe selinoid and it will start right up.
Now--- where do I start looking?? There is some kinda relay that plugs in to 2 wires that look to br coming from the starter selinoid. What is this relay. The parts man said it's part number was R3111. Could this be the problem. I was bolted to the engine with a little bracket and the braket broke but all else looks ok. Shoud this piece be gronded to work.
Any Idea's would be very much appreciated.
Thanks much Dad

Well your problem is one of two things. Like you said, the relay could be one of the problems. I hope thats it because the other problem you could have is rotted out wiring, which is only fixed by purchasing a new wiring harness from a dealer. Thats what I had to do and its $300+. The relay also comes from a dealer but is alot cheaper. From what your telling me, you may need a new starter relay, and if that doesnt solve it, a rewiring.
Naxtar--yes we found the problem. I forgot to post a follow up on here. Shame on me.
The problem ended up being the relay that is off the starter. It is a little square relay that is attached right up above the starter. I'm pretty sure he called it a starter relay. We finally took it off and bit the dirt and bought one. I think it was around $26.00 dollars. fixed the problem and have had no trouble since.
Hope this helps you out and anyone else that runs up agianst this problem.
