Bearing is replaced as an asembly with the spindle. It is not a serviceable part and must be replaced asa whole piece.
get the lube guys to put it on a hoist and spin the tires while on a hoist, you can usually hear the noise that way

when you say replaced with the spindle as assembly. Do you mean the spindle coming out of the Transmission or is it part of the half shaft(axle?) I replaced the hub on the left side becouse the sound would stop when turning left (pressure taken off left tire and put on right???? ) thats what I read and always heard. Any ways I was turning thenew hub while car in neutral so I could tighten hub bolts I did here like a light howl noise every time I would turn the axle. Would bad axle bearing pretty much imitate the same sound asa bad hub?

the spindle or hub assembly is the part the rotors and rims bolts to.
Check to make sure the backing plates aren't rubbing on your rotors

I have replaced the hub I also replaced the rotor at the same time. After replacing the Hub the noise is still there. IT is exactly the same way it was before I changed the hub. I thought it was the hub ...When I am straight or turn right noise is there. When I jerk/turn left the noise decreases dramaticly that becouse the when turning left the pressure is on the right tire.....So now I need to see if there is another bearing on the left side like where the axle connect to the tranny??????? Do you know if there is one...

I put the car up on stand took both tires off. Had the car in drive and idling ....with axles spinning at idel I could here a liitle bit better, The sound is coming form the same side that the new hub is on. The hub is good the bbots are all fine but the sound is like those big marble people twirl in there hand to relax/relief stress. The sound they make when thehit each othe but speed it the sound up a little...it is coming from well...it sounds like it is right where the half shaft meets the tranny....is there bearing concealed atr the end if the half shaft or maybe right inside thranny where the axle connects to tranny???Anyideas

[align=left]I have a '97 Cav with 142,000 mi. At about 110,000 mi i started hearing a thumping noise when i was driving but it only did it when i went straight and turned left. Someone told me it was the bearing, so i changed the bearing hub and it went away. A few months later it was the opposite. So i changed the other bearing hub too, but it didnt go away this time. It dumbfounded me for the longest time cause i took it back and got another one. I even changed the first one again. Finally after it annoyed me for several months i took it in to the shop. The mechanic told me it was a bearing inside the transmission that made it do this. He showed me how loose the axle was where it came out of the transmission. So i had him replace the tranny (I had to get a used one because of finances) and I haven't had any problems for about a year now. No noise at all.

Unfortunately you will probably have to change the whole tranny to fix this problem. I don't think you can just tear it apart and replace it. The mechanic said this was only the second time he has seen this problem. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
