Default ECM will not link to scanner 2000 Cavalier

I just failed emmissions because the ecm will not communicate.
When I attach my scanner, it does not even light up.
Scanner works fine on my other cars.
I did see some suggestions to check the fuses. I will do that when I go home, but any other ideas to check tonight?
Thanks,
RYDREW55

Check fuses very very common. Does you cigarette lighter socket work? The data link connector shares that fuse in a lot of cars.

Default Scan Tool Not Linking

I recently prchased a 2001 cavalier for my son and it just came
up with a check engine light.

My scan tool was not getting power. Found the diagnostic link and
the cigarette lighter share a 20 amp fuse. replaced the fuse and it
immediately popped. I will look into this and report my findings on the short.

I put my test light across the terminals in place of the fuse
and had a short. Removed the cigarette lighter element and the trouble
cleared. If you wiggled the the element or put it in and out slowly
the trouble would come and go. Tossed the lighter element in
the garbage and problem solved.

I could now pull the code P0442 (small Evap leak)

Looked like the check valve in the gas cap was stuck. Lubed it and the
o-ring with a few drops of oil, reset the code and will see what happens.

MDTAHOE, Thanks for your help.
