Fuel pump? Short? HELP! 2000 cavalier 2.2 sedan
Car ran fine until one day it stopped as i was pulling onto the highway to go to work. It gave a little surge and died in the middle of the road. At first i thought it was the alternator, since it was fine and died driving. Alternator checks out at advance, battery is going bad though. Got a new battery. Disconnected the negative on the battery and turned everything off to check draw at the battery terminal: 12.6v. Spent weeks searching for a short. My brother has the same car, his is 99 manual and he came over yesterday. Checked voltage on his car, SAME! I could not make them read differently, what i did to his i did to mine, same reading every time. I believe this eliminates a short, correct? So, back to basics, fuel air spark. Spark is good, air is good. Replaced the fuel filter and the car ran for 10 minutes and died again. Battery now reads 12.9, good alternator, right?(i forgot to check while it was running) Could it be my fuel pump? When i turn the key to on, i hear it hum, and i replaced the relay.. All help is greatly appreciated!
Just pour a small amount of gas (or a small amount of starting fluid) into the intake and hit the starter. If it runs for a few seconds and dies, you've got a fuel supply problem. If it still won't run, you've got an electrical problem.
