Default Getting a Little More Out of Her

A friend of mine has an '04 Cavalier 5 speed manual (BRIGHT yellow), with a 2.2L L61 Ecotec in it, and he's looking to beef up the HP/Torque from the car. He's got a $1000-$2000 budget, and I'm thinking a Cat-Back Exhaust and AEM cold air intake, but I'm looking to see what the true enthusiasts think about this? Also, what would be other decent mods that would help him out? Thanks in advance!

@kevin: He's put on the car, it's in fantastic condition and I don't see him getting rid of it for a new car anytime soon.

@Seg: What sort of V6?
