Default how to diagnose lifter noise

hey i have the 2.2l if i put my stethascope on my valve cover while running i hear ticking is that normal what should i hear? how can i for sure know if its lifters or not? also if it was the timing chain what would that sound like with the stethascope? it one or the other but really not sure which . please give me some advice. thanks

Its probably the valve lifters.
If it was the timing chain,you would hear an awful noise.
