Default Lighting problems

Ok, I had a problem with my headlights...they started turning themselves on & off at random when cold. That problem didn't continue after the weather warmed up. Then I noticed that when I turned on the headlights, all of my dash lights (including the stereo dimming) went black. The radio would still work, but it would have no lights.

I replaced the combination switch (head light, turn signal, cruise control, hazards) and this didn't help. I did notice that it looked like one of the wires from the connector was scorched. I assumed that the switch had burnt out on that terminal and a replacement switch would fix it, but no such luck. Does anybody know what would cause this or where I could figure out where that wire goes so that I can track down the problem?
