Default Please Help! 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

Hello Everyone. I need your assistance. My 1998 Chevy Cavalier 2.4 L has some issue when starting. The key is worn out from so much use but it does crank when I'm in luck and all the red lights in the instrument cluster turn on when cranking. When the instrument cluster red lights don't turn then the car just cranks and immediately stops and it seems the instrument cluster gauges don't move including the rpm.

It seems like something in the ignition engages when all the red lights turn on in the instrument cluster and starts normally.

I really appreciate your assistance.

Wondering if you've found any solutions....I have the same problem, but only when it's cold. One day a started my car over 100 times just for it to immediately die.

Hello. Unfortunately, I have not found any solutions and no one in this forum has provided any advice. Please let me know if you find any solution. Thank you so much.

Buy a new ignition switch (or a used one with a key), or if you're a cheapskate like me, remove the switch, cut it open and modify it so that no key is needed. That is, so you can turn the ignition with a screw driver or with any key.
Or, remove the key section of the switch and operated it without a key.
If you're worried about security use a steering wheel lock.

After getting the steering column apart, check carefully for broken or frayed connectors, loose contacts, etc.
