sick 2001 cavalier

My wives 01 cav died at a light today and when she restarted it the engine raced up too about 3500 rpms and stayed there, she tried putting it into drive again and it just dies. Anyone have any ideas ???

oh by the way no engine light came on and it has trhe plain jane 4 cyln engine. thanks
