Do I have to remove the exhaust manifold to replace the thermostat?

 

What year? What engine?

 

2003 2.2 L
I think the thermostat is right under that exhaust manifold?

 

This is right from the service manual. There were pictures but I do not know how to post them.


If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the exhaust manifold.
Drain the cooling system.

Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolts.

Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.

Remove the thermostat.
Installation Procedure

Install the thermostat.

Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
See: Service Precautions\Vehicle Damage Warnings\Fastener Notice

Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt. Tighten the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt to 10 Nm (18 inch lbs.) .
If equipped with an automatic transmission, install the exhaust manifold.
Fill the cooling system.

Today I finally had time to take care of it. I couldn't get off exhaust nuts. Instead of soaking them and waiting I decided to give it a try without removing the manifold. Turned out it's possible, I was able to get that pipe out from there!
Yes, it is a 2.2 OHC with automatic transmission.
