Default What is this part?

My son put his 2000 Cavalier in the ditch last night. He was going very slow, but there is a frozen ridge in the ditch. It was very foggy and our gravel road is mush right now that sucked him right off the road when he got too close to the edge. We found this part when we pulled the car out. The car seems to drive fine, but we only drove it maybe 1/8th mile to the driveway. The "check gages" light is on. What do you think? Get it towed to a garage or ok to drive it about 5 miles? I really appreciate any help

My 2¢, it looks to be part of the evap system. Is the part a hose or is it an electrical connection on the other end?

If you are not losing any important fluids, oil, gas, coolant. I think you are okay to drive it to a shop to have the codes read, I suspect its an evap part...

Ah there you go, its the vent for the filler tube....it will need to fit correctly or you will get the check engine light for "evap large leak"

You should be able to drive, it will not cause any driveability issues.
However you might want to get it up on a rack for an inspection for any other concerns...
How big the fix is depends on where and how it got torn from the vehicle...
it might just plug right back in, but if was torn away there may be other damage to the other end of the hose and what ever the vent portion was attached too...
