Default New to the forum Looking for some guidance

Hey Forum.. I picked up a 1986 El Camino last fall off a young kid who had good intentions just didn't take the time to do things right and learn hoe to do them as such.. he dropped a 350 from a 1993 K1500 along with the TH350.. body needs some work and paint and lil odds and ends and she be a nice weekend ride..

looking for some advise on the engine work to be done i haven't pulled it out yet but i wanted to send it out to the machine shop to get inspected and cleaned( i don't know what he did to it )... also the heads done i belive GM did something with those heads that spiraled the ports and ended up causing restrictions and not more flow like they planned.. then I'm thinking swap back to a carb from the TBI due to this rat nest of wiring this kid created swapping engines.. budget is short so down the road will do a EFI but right now sweet and simple.. also a CAM kit and some new headers

what im asking is what cam set up will be good keeping her mostly stock but getting the best out it for a bad *** street ride im not looking to hit the strip just smoke a few guys from light to light

i was thinking hyd 268/280 or 274/286 what do you guys think

i am gonna rebuild the tranny with a new shift kit also and swap the shifter to the floor with a B&M kit

let me know..

Also thinking about upgrading the rear end to be safe with a kit out of OPGI mag any suggestions .. Like I said just trying to have her solid with a lil more hitch in her giddy up

1986 and 87 factory automatic trans were the 700R4 also known as the MD8. the rear end is a 308. I bet your Speedo is off by 10 mph under what you are actually going. I have 3 El Camino's and ran into that issue. If your 86 had a tbi system in it, it's not that hard to get to work with a more powerful engine. doesn't matter if it was a 4.3l V6 or the 5L V8. I just rebuilt a 350 truck motor and put in my 85. I used an Elgin cam, but I have the electronic carb set-up and am having a hard time makine the ecu run the engine correctly with the electronic advance.

So what do I have to change the rear end to in order to fix this problem ...3.23 or 3.42
