Default Torque converter?

I have a 70 el camino with a 350 eng. and a th350 trans. I put a comp cam in, and now it doesn't idle in gear (I have it at very high rpm in neut to keep it running and it still stalls at the light). I've been told I need a higher stall torque converter. I could use some advice...thanks

Default high lift

as with any high lift cam the higher the duration of the cam the automatic's dont like to idle much over 292 duration can be a problem . then you will probably need between .3500-4000 stall converter then watch out for higher trans temps .you can waste the transmission if your not careful . i toasted the turbo 350 in my 70 chevelle and i only had 292 duration with a 4000 stall Fairbanks converter .don't do any highway driving that's how i wasted mine . the hotter cam engines survive better with a 4 speed .

If you run a points distributor, try removing the springs on the weights and running straight timing.. The points spring will retard the timing during start, this will NOT work in any electronic distributor..

This really cleaned up my big cammed 462 Pontiac motor that idled with 10" of vacuum.. Now that I sold the car, I will never run a big cammed motor on the street again, what a royal pain!

Sticks are much more forgiving like Bill said..
