Black 82 Silverado
Howdy,,,just joined up looking for some help maybe. I Recently, cobbed on to a really nice low mileage Silverado with a sick 305 and auto. The PO sold it cause people had tried to steal it too many times and most recent attempt,,the thieves took a ball pein to the ignition switch and he said ENOUGH, and sold it to me. I drove it on my trailer and engine ran fine,,but,,Soon as I got it off the trailer at home, the engine started missing and just kept getting worse the longer it ran. Finally quit, so I ran compression and there is zero compression on 5 of the 8 cylinders. Pulled left valve cover and rocker arms do not move for chit,,!! Pulled the 305 out thinking I would rebuild it but I keep hearing horrer stories bout them 305's. I am at a loss at how to proceed,, till I answer an ad for a child's 4 wheeler for my Grandson and there on the barn floor is a complete 454 with chrome valve covers and emblems "Heartbeat Of America" ,,!! I ask the farmer if for sale and he tells me it was in his 1 ton duelly and he was pulling a trailerfull of cows back home when radiator hose busted and he had to get it towed back home. He refilled with water but said it had a miss so he bought a crate engine instead. He tells me since I had bought the 4 wheeler for my Grandson, he would sell me the 454 and the 4 wheeler for,,,,,,,,,,$325,,,I dang near ripped my pants getting my wallet out to pay him, so he loaded it on my trk with his tractor and home I go,,,,,
I am going to do a complete rebuild but am kinda puzzled at the cylinder bore. Using my Starrett calipers, the bore of the cylinders is 4.230 to 4.0235,,,WTH,,according to several places I checked, the standard bore is 4.250. There is NO ridge on any of the cylinders. According to the casting number on the rear of engine at transmission, 361959 designates a 454 so,,why the discreptancy with the bore numbers I'm getting with my calipers????
Sorry for the long winded post.. Any help out there,,??
