Replacing ECU/ECM and BCM
Hi All,
My Chevy Cruze 2.0 LT (2010) would not start. I took it in and after a few months, the technician working on the car reports that the ECU and BCM is damaged.
Can I replace with used ECU and new BCM?
Can I wipe off the old ECU and get it reprogrammed?
Do I need the other components (e.g. keys and BCM)?
I'm based in South Africa. GM pulled out a few years back but some dealers still have access to their network. One dealer says they can wipe off and reprogram the (used) ECU an the other dealer says they cannot (I have to get the whole set from another car: ECU, BCM, keys and cluster)
Background:
A few months back, the car would not crank/start. I towed to the mechanic. They could not diagnose because it would not communicate with the scanner. He checked the wiring, connections and sensors but could not locate the fault. He tried to start the car again after a few days ant it started successfully. A week later, same problem: the car would not start. It would restart after a few minutes. It did this a few times.
I took it back to the mechanic. He took out the ECU and sent it for repairs (no luck). When it (the ECU) came back, a different technician installed it and he confirmed both the ECU and BCM are faulty. He suspects the BCM damaged the ECU.
It's not worth it to buy a new ECU (the car has over 190 000 km).
