2006 Chevrolet Equinox ABS Activation at Low Speed
Hi all,
After researching this site for a few days trying to figure out how to fix my issue, I wanted to post a follow up to what worked for me.
The issue: While braking, when approaching a complete stop (around 5mph-10mph) my ABS would kick in and the brake pedal would push back as it would if you were slipping in snow. This was bearable but was extremely annoying. Note: I also did not have an ABS light showing up or a code being thrown.
Previous fixes: I should note that this starting occurring once I changed my front rotors and pads. After this, I had already ordered new rear shoes and drums, so I put those on shortly after. I was still having the issue.
What I did: Today I popped off all 4 wheels and had the car up on jack stands. I went around to all 4 tires and pulled the ABS/wheel speed sensors just behind the hubs/rotors. I pushed the wires gently into the harness to make sure they were not loose and used electrical tape in order to protect the wires and then also used some around the connector points where the wires connected. After cleaning out the connectors, I used dielectric grease (you can also use conductive grease) in the actual harness itself on both sides (yes, I know very controversial). After this I reconnected the harnesses, put some anti-seize where the wheel hits the hub/drum threw all the wheels back on. Took it for a drive and it has been about 200 miles of driving today and I have had no issues, no lights, no codes, etc.
In summary: The new brakes, rotors, and drums may have helped this issue but it was still prevalent afterward. In my opinion, the grease helped the connection stay consistent when braking instead of having weak spots. The electrical tape was to ensure that the wires and connections would stay free of salt, dirt, etc. here in Michigan during the winter and down dirt roads in the summer.

Hi all again,
So after I fixed this, it worked for another day or so and then my ABS went back to kicking on at low speeds. Luckily, 1AAuto helped me somewhat identify the cause of this. I actually found the video under a similar search regarding Chevy trucks.
What I did: If you go around to all 4 wheel bearings and unscrew the sensor from the actual hub (with an allen wrench) you will mostly likely find what I did. It had rust buildup like crazy and the sensor had some adhesive/gasket on the tip of it. I pulled the sensor, cleaned it up with brake cleaner and a rag. The sensor mount on the hub will most likely have rust on it as well, if it was bad like mine, take a scuffing pad or piece of sandpaper or wire bush and go at it. Don't dig too deep as the sensor needs to remain flush when mounted. Soak everything in brake cleaner once again to make sure you get everything off, I sprayed it in the sensor hole as well to make sure the bearing was clean on the inside.
Reattach everything and do the same for all 4 wheels, if you did not use enough brake cleaner on everything you may get an ABS activation after, but just hit the brakes hard once and it should clear up.
