Default Trans. fluid level

Recently changed left CV shaft and bearing. When pulling shaft from trans. about 1/2 cup of fluid leaked out. Was trans. slightly overfilled or should I replace that small amount? Trans. is shifting OK but don't want to damage trans. due to lack of fluid.

you should check the fluid level and make adjustments based on that.
no idea the engine, trans or model year so can't make specific recommendations.

you can check the level yourself but it is hard to get at the bolt to release the trans dipstick. its very well hidden.
if you need fluid and you have the asin transmission. Its requires a specific fluid...if you used dex vi... you will f your trans.

Just put roughly that 1/2 cup amount back into it. It's not a tremendous amount of fluid.

but you should check to know where its at....maybe its full and needs none...maybe it needs more that 1/2 cup. it must be added thru the dipstick hole so you are removing the dipstick regardless. Why...I destroyed my wife's BMW front diff by not doing this. 4 hours and 400 bucks later....was not a good day.

Thanks for the tips. Where exactly is the dipstick hole? Is it the 1" hex at the top rear of the trans? Luckily my nephew is service manager at a Toyota dealer so I will get fluid from him. Chevy wants $299.99 for a fluid change.

The dipstick is tough to access. It's located on the front of the transmission above and to the right of where the front transmission mount is. It has a yellow handle and is held in with one 12mm hex head bolt. It's much easier to access from underneath, especially if you remove the front transmission mount. The dealership wanting $300 for a fluid change seems par for the course, but is still highway robbery. They can't even use the overpriced OEM/AC Delco fluid because it's been discontinued (at least in the one-quart bottles). When it was available it was crazy expensive, like $20+/qt. The same stuff from a Toyota dealership is less than $6/qt.

Toyota T-IV fluid. The Toyota part number for a one quart bottle is 00279-000T4-01. Toyota stopped using T-IV (in favor of the newer WS fluid) in most of their automatic transmissions by 2008. As a result, Toyota dealerships may not have it in stock anymore. The last time I changed the fluid in ours they did, but that was about four or five years ago.
