Default G20 differential removal

On a 1986 short G20 , do I have to remove gas tank to pull the differential out. I have the van up as high as it can go on leaf springs,
above axle line but still have some to go for a straight pull out.

I don't see why you would need to, but I haven't seen a 30yr old van lately. Can you post a photo?

No you don't need to drop the tank. You'll need to disconnect the brake lines from the differential, driveshaft, anti lock brake sensors, parking brake cables, and I'd consider new U-bolts and just cut the old ones off.
