check your local autoparts place I have a 1 ton van and my starter was 49.00 at autozone. Buy one with a lifetime warranty because in my situation starters only break when I am broke.

sounds like the bendix took a dump on ya....
was barely throwing the gear out weakly and the teeth were grinding against the flywheel teeth.... starter replacement is easy, and should be extra simple on a step van.
check the flywheel teeth for abnormal wear, it could also be a bad spot on the flywheel teeth that was the original cause of the problem

edit: and yes i agree, go for the lifetime warranty, its not unheard of to get a weak/bad starter right out of the box with todays less then stellar manufacturing
