I am trying to program the remote for my 97 Chevy Express van. I have a paper clip that I connect to ports 4 and 8 on the OBD connector. After I plug in the paper clip to ports 4 and 8, nothing happens. The door locks are supposed to cycle and then be put into programming mode but they aren't. What am I doing wrong?

 

The paperclip trick was for OBD 1. I think your 1997 has OBD 2

 

I’m having the same issue. Used paper clip and tried copper wire and neither did anything. Did you ever find a solution?

I installed an aftermarket key fob from amazon for $20. It works great.
