Hi all, I have recently started having problems with the dreaded "death wobble", but only at speeds from about 45 to 50 mph. New shocks are on the agenda, as are new tires, but in poking about under the van, I notice that the front bump stops are almost touching the lower control arms. This can't be right, can it? the van is a 1 ton, with about 135k on it, 2011. I have found no aftermarket springs, unless I want to lift the van, and I don't think that is what I want to do. OEM springs are not terribly expensive, but am not sure that they will put the van back where it belongs. Decisions, decisions.....

No. Check your suspension components; anything worn could cause your wobble. If it happens over bumps have someone smart check for bump steer. A condition in which the steering linkage is not level. This will cause abnormal toe changes as the vehicle Jounces and rebounds.

The springs are what determine ride height. Adjust the torsion bars to correct the ride height.

since when do one tons use front coil springs?

 

Did someone put aftermarket rims on it and not use hub spacers?

 

did you go out and count the number of rear leaf springs or wheel studs on each wheel? or check the gvwr?

I don't think it matters if its a 1500, 3500 or what not.. diagnosis should be the same? I have never seen a van with front leaf springs..


Anyway.. Put your new shocks and tires on, check for any worn front end components and replace, alignment and see where you are at. If the front springs aren't expensive, certainly wouldn't hurt to put them in while doing everything else. I know there isn't a huge gap above the bumpstops.. but at that mileage the springs maybe due.
